Broad Band Lightning Fast Internet Connection!

By now, unless you live in a cave, you have heard & seen the amazing new iPhone from Apple. The iPhone stands alone in the race of cellular phone manufacturers to bring state of the art technology to a single device that fits in the palm of your hand. I have had the iPhone in my hands and I must say it is absolutely amazing.

In order to understand the decision the 2nd largest cellular phone company made, to initially pass on being the exclusive distributor of the iPhone on Verizon, we must go back to the pre-release of the iPhone prior to June 29th of 2007. It seems Apple had more control in mind of the iPhone on Verizon, than Verizon could stomach. Apple’s initial dealings with Verizon stated dramatic unprecedented variables that included a percentage of monthly service revenues, control over support and service, and even control over distribution. All of which were not advantageous to the Verizon’s CEO’s and share holders, and satellite distributors such as Wal-Mart, Best Buy and other Verizon outlets. “That would have put our own distribution partners at a disadvantage” to Apple and Verizon stores, said Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president. Another hitch was customer care, if an iPhone became unstable and went haywire, Apple wanted sole discretion to decide whether to replace or repair the phone. “They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat …on hardware and service support,” Gerace says.

Aside from Apple’s demands there are also technology restraints within the existing Verizon CDMA network, seeing how the current version of the iPhone only operates on the GSM networks. Even though the first generation iPhone does not support CDMA, the one planned for Europe later this year may already support the CDMA technology. Another issue believed to be a hurdle in the iPhone on the Verizon network would be how Verizon likes to put their skin on their existing phone OS’s which Apple would probably not agree to, as it is slow & unstable. From what I have read, until Verizon converts to the WCDMA technology from the older, outdated CDMA Apple more than likely would not support Verizon.

So is there any hope to see the iPhone on Verizon? If Verizon upgraded to the 3G network model it would be able to support the iPhone GSM version, thus boosting the sales for Apple and actually have the potential to meet the sales goal for 2008 of 10 million iPhone sales! The sales figures in 2007 for the iPhone topped 1.1 million phones sold.
