Do I need a phone/notebook data plan in NYC or are the free WIFI sufficient?

I want to save money because I have got to pay for my education and I would like to know if it is necessary to get a data plan for internet usage in NYC, both with my Macbook and my iPhone? Since there are many free wifis, you don’t need them, do you? Or do they make you order something everywhere in order to get the password for their WIFI?
