Team building does not always have to be about terrifying obstacle courses, impossible puzzles or shoot-em up games. Sometimes team building comes about through small but ongoing collaborative activities that continuously strengthen the team and enhance their confidence individually and collectively.

At various times in our working lives we have all participated in some form of team building activity that involves physical and mental challenges on which ‘team’ unity can be built. Many of these activities are fun and the shared memory and experience does bring people closer together. But you can’t and don’t want to be doing that every week-end – after all, you have a life to live!

So what sort of activities can you include in your day to day work that does enable similar sorts of collaboration and team building? One that I have used often with all sorts of groups has been digital story telling. This is a simple process where you take a selection of images and then add your own words to convey the message that you want – this rolls up into a movie that can be shown on computers, personal digital assistants and mobile phones.

For example, a group of maintenance staff took pictures of various aspects of machinery they had to operate, then they explained the features highlighted by the pictures and instantly had a movie for new employees to understand and refer back to anytime. They did the movie in several languages and started it with a welcome to the new person – how quickly do you think they became part of the team? Pretty fast..

Another group reported on a conference they had attended by taking shots of different presenters and then each adding their own report on the presentation against the pictures. They submitted a 5 minute movie as the report that everyone actually looked at – instead of just filing away. They not only got credit for doing such a great report but they also got their next applications for going to conferences approved more easily!

I have been teaching people how to tell digital stories for many years now and I now offer a complete starter kit on my website and when I started working with people on doing collaborative stories a whole new range of possibilities opened up. You don’t have to have everyone together at the same time, so each person can record their part when it fits into their schedule and it means one person can produce the whole thing but everyone who contributes gets a credit by virtue of being able to hear their voice.
